Website builder vs web designer: a fair comparison

Neither option is always better. A builder suits people with time and a simple brief; a designer suits people who want it done for them or need something less standard. The right answer depends on your time, budget, brief and how much control you want.

The middle ground

Many designers build on a website builder or a common content management system, then hand it over so you can edit it. That can give you a professional start with day-to-day control. Make sure the account is in your name.

Five questions to decide

  1. How many hours can you realistically give this in the next month?
  2. What must the site do: pages only, bookings, payments, a shop?
  3. What’s your three-year budget, including subscriptions, domain and any support?
  4. How likely are you to want to move platform later?
  5. Who will keep it up to date?

See what a website builder really costs and what happens if you leave one.

We run Zoib. Web Designer Limited, which publishes this site, sells done-for-you websites and hosting as Zoib, so we have an interest in the “designer” side of this comparison. We’ve tried to be fair, and the sources are linked so you can check.

Questions people ask

Is a website builder cheaper than a web designer?

Often at the start, because you’re providing the labour. Over several years, subscriptions, add-ons and your own time add up, so compare the total cost and the time involved, not just the first payment.

Can I switch from a website builder to a designer later?

Yes, but you may need to rebuild rather than move the site. For example, Wix says Wix sites must run on Wix’s servers. Your domain can usually be moved.

Are website builders bad for SEO?

Not inherently. Mainstream builders produce sites search engines can read. Content, structure and how well the site answers people’s questions matter more than the tool.
